The cantata "Sermon on the Edge" is based on Jesus' 15-minute series of parables that he delivered to a crowd of ordinary folks on a hillside. The "Sermon on the Mount", as it is traditionally known, is found in Matthew, chapters 5-7. It is not about how to get to heaven when we die, but how to be part of heaven, right here, right now. The ideas in this sermon inhabit lots of modern thinking, yet it was delivered 2000 years ago. All in all, this sermon is one of the edgiest statements in history. It never quits being edgy, never permits you to relax in comfortable thought for one minute. Yet it opens the door to a bright new world, right here in this temporary life on our spinning planet.
